Job Talks

For general advice on your job talk, regardless of your field, please watch the videos of Jeff Lichtman's luminous remarks:
2015, part 1 and 2015, part 2

In general,

  • If not provided, seek clarification from the Chair of the Search Committee about what will be expected of you.
  • Use an outline slide at the beginning.
  • 50 mins tops.
  • Always include a section on "Future Directions," clarifying how what you do now relates to the future (a separate chalk talk may not be expected or attended). Make sure to leave enough time for this (10-15 minutes).

If you also need to prepare a chalk talk, a video recording of Erik Snapp's comprehensive remarks and advice can be found here
