Careers
A Postdoctoral Fellowship is, by definition, temporary, so it's never too early to start thinking about the next step.
Whether you're going on the academic job market or seeking opportunities outside of academia, I'm available to help. If you'd like to schedule an individual career counseling appointment, just shoot me an email (kargere@fas.harvard.edu).
Individual Development Plan
Ideally, you should begin your postdoctoral training by discussing your research and career plans with your Faculty Advisor.
- Prepare for your first meeting using the Initial Mentoring Meeting Template.
- Use this template, originally developed by Stanford University, for subsequent progress meetings.
Beyond the Professoriate
Offered by the Mignone Center with support from the FAS Office of Faculty Affairs, Beyond the Professoriate (BtP), is a e-learning platform to support Ph.Ds. and postdocs. as they explore and pursue careers within and beyond academia. In addition to online resources, the platform offers monthly seminars and on-demand videos on topics helping postdocs to explore career options, decide on a career path, and develop the skills to build a career. These include webinars such as “What Nonacademic Employers Really Value About your Ph.D.,” “How to set yourself up for career success,” and “How to network when you don’t have a network.”

Postdoc Portal
Advanced graduate students and postdocs begin by creating a postdoc profile. Faculty members and research scientists interested in talking to potential postdocs or advertising an open position create a research group profile from which they can post postdoc job openings. Faculty job positions and postdoc fellowships can be posted by faculty and administrators without a research job profile. Automated matches are made based on shared areas of interest between postdoc profiles, available positions, fellowships, and research group profile.
