Massachusetts Paid Family & Medical Leave

Beginning in January 2021, Harvard University will offer all eligible employees paid family and medical leave. Harvard’s new paid family and medical leave benefits, which are modeled on the Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave Law, are designed to enhance the many family-friendly and medical leave benefits that Harvard offers its employees.

Please note: The Harvard MA PFML applies to

  • Employees (on salary, receiving a W2);
  • Former employees (on salary, receiving a W2);
  • and Stipendee postdocs (stipend, receiving a 1099, Job code 000949).

All others are eligible for unpaid leave in the form of FMLA. Please contact your funding agency for confirmation of any additional leave benefits you may have with them.

This medical release form provides all the necessary information about the process, which involves 1) informing your department administrator and 2) the Lincoln Group. Your department administrator will need the following information: Anticipated start date, anticipated length of leave, type of leave, and expected return date.

When you register, you will be asked for the Company Code. It is, somewhat unsurprisingly, "Harvard."

A detailed overview of the new benefits and important information about how to apply for these leaves may be found in these policy summaries:
