The Diversity Statement

According to the University of California at San Diego website, “the purpose of the statement is to identify candidates who have professional skills, experience and/or willingness to engage in activities that would enhance campus diversity and equity efforts” (emphasis added). In the FAS, job ads ask candidates to "Describe efforts to encourage diversity, inclusion, and belonging, including past, current, and anticipated future contributions in these areas."

One way to organize your statement is three parts: Personal experience; Contributions to date; and Faculty Action Plan--which directly address what committee members are looking for.

This set of questions/prompts, kindly compiled and shared by Alexis Stokes, will help you to develop your statement. Another immensely useful document is this one, from the Berkeley Office for Faculty Equity & Welfare, which includes a rubric that search committees use for assessing candidate contributions to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB).

Here are also some slides from Alexis' Diversity Statement Workshop.
